How do I tell the difference between silver and stainless steel?

I came across an antique tea pot set. How can I tell if it is silver or stainless steel? It is not magnetic. Would it have silver stamped on it somewhere?

There are several things that could be stamped on it that would tell you what it is.

If it has 925 stamped on it, then its sterling silver.
If it has SP stamped on it, then it is probably silver plate. Obviously, if it has “sterling” stamped on it ….

If it has stuff stamped on it, but not anything that obviously tells you what it is, then put those numbers and letters into a search engine, along with the words “tea pot” and see what comes up. That might help you find a maker which would help you figure out what it is.

And it might also be aluminum (which at one time was a very precious metal), or perhaps an alloy of nickel. It’s not necessarily either stainless or sterling, just because it’s not magnetic.
